Breast cancer, oral cancers, and cervical cancer are the most common cancers in India. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that over 375 000 people will be diagnosed and almost 220 000 people will die from one of these cancers in India in 2018.
In an effort to reduce these numbers, IARC has partnered with the GBH American hospital, Udaipur, to develop an innovative comprehensive model to screen and educate people about noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, breast cancer, oral cancers, and cervical cancer. If successful, the model could be used in other places where access to services is limited.
Dr Partha Basu, Head of the IARC Screening Group, and Dr Sangeeta Sen, consultant gynaecologist at Udaipur’s GBH American Hospital, describe the project, conceived by IARC, which is being piloted in the Gogunda rural block of Rajasthan. It aims to increase awareness of cancer and screen people for these diseases, in line with Indian government policy to screen both men and women between the ages of 30 and 60 for common NCDs.
